The Mzungu Moment

This page preserves the Machakos ride intro connected to the opening of FRACTURE. It begins with a single word from a young boy and opens the path into identity, lineage, return, and belonging.

Recently I was riding through Machakos on the back of a motorcycle.

A young boy looked over and shouted:

“Mzungu!”

I smiled and waved back.

But what he could not have known was that I was riding home from the family land where I had just been welcomed back into the Kamba Tribe.

A word from a young boy.
A motorcycle ride home.
A return already in motion.

Sometimes people see us from the outside.

But identity is deeper than appearance.

Deeper than distance.
Deeper than names forgotten.
Deeper than what was lost.

And sometimes...

the road home begins before we understand where it is taking us.
